Network Tasman owns and operates the electricity distribution network in the wider Nelson and Tasman areas, excluding Nelson Electricity's supply area in Nelson city.
The Network Tasman electricity distribution network distributes power to approximately 36,000 consumer connections in an area of 10,800 sq km in the northwestern corner of the South Island. The area covered by the network is diverse, ranging from high consumer density urban areas to remote rural areas with low consumer density.
Network Tasman distributes electricity to residential and commercial consumers within its area from five separate Transpower grid exit points. Total electricity distributed through the network is 701 GWh, with a peak load of 133 MW.
Network Tasman issues an annual statement of corporate intent, which outlines the overall intentions and objectives that the company will follow. The company is required by the Energy Companies Act 1992 to operate as a commercially efficient organisation and achieve rates of return set out in its Statement of Corporate Intent. By achieving its performance targets Network Tasman is able to give an annual line charge discount to consumers and pay a dividend to the Network Tasman Trust.
Network Tasman is wholly owned by the Network Tasman Trust. a consumer trust that holds all shares in Network Tasman on behalf of the electricity consumers connected to the Network Tasman distribution network. The Trust distributes surplus funds annually by way of a tax free dividend to all eligible consumers.
