NMi

In 2005 the Nelson Marlborough Inforegion (NMi) was formed through an MOU between the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency (EDA) and the Marlborough Regional Development Trust.  NMi’s purpose was to enhance economic development through the use of ICT in the region.

Through 2006 Network Tasman and the NMi worked closely on the region’s application to the Governments Broadband Challenge Fund.  By leveraging NTL’s existing investment the region was able to secure $1.8m of funding to extend broadband into uneconomic areas and to build a Nelson Internet Exchange.

This funding would not have been available to the region had Network Tasman not already laid its backbone fibre network across parts of Nelson/Tasman and through the Wairau Valley to Blenheim.
